BDC

Business Development Center

BDC stands for Business Development Center — the team (sometimes centralized across multiple stores in a dealer group) responsible for handling incoming internet leads, phone calls, and appointment setting, so salespeople on the floor can focus on customers who are actually there.

What a BDC actually does

A BDC rep's job is mostly written and phone communication: responding to a form-fill lead within minutes, calling a customer back after a missed appointment, following up on a quiet lead that's gone cold, and confirming appointments before they happen. The goal is turning an anonymous online inquiry into a scheduled, kept appointment.

Why speed matters more than almost anything else here

Internet leads go cold fast — a customer who filled out a form on one dealer's site has usually filled out the same form on two or three others. A reply within minutes has a meaningfully better chance of getting a response than one that goes out hours later, which is why BDC performance is often measured on response time as much as on volume.

Practicing it

DealerSim's BDC Text Trainer puts a 45-second clock on realistic lead-response scenarios — a hot lead, a cross-shopper, a going-cold lead — and scores both reply quality and speed.
