Trial Close

Testing the Temperature Before Asking

A trial close is a low-pressure question that checks whether a customer is warming up to a purchase, without directly asking for the sale. Instead of "are you ready to buy today," a trial close might sound like "how does that payment feel compared to what you were expecting?" — a question that reveals buying temperature while leaving room for either answer.

Why it's not the same as closing

An actual close asks for a decision. A trial close asks for a reaction. The difference matters because a premature close attempt on a customer who isn't ready yet can feel pushy and reset the whole conversation, while a well-timed trial close simply provides information the salesperson can act on — proceed toward a close, or address a lingering concern first.

What a good trial close sounds like

Each of these gives the customer an easy, low-stakes way to signal interest — or to surface an objection that's still standing in the way, which is just as valuable to know.

Practicing it

DealerSim's Test Drive Close Simulator is built specifically around this moment — the transition from "that was a good drive" into a real conversation about commitment, which is exactly where a trial close either opens the door or gets fumbled.
