First Visit vs Return Visit
An "up" is a customer walking onto the lot for the first time — the term comes from the old rotation system where salespeople took turns being "up" for the next walk-in. A "be-back" is a customer who's already visited once (or shopped elsewhere) and has come back, usually further along in their decision than a fresh up.
A fresh up usually needs a full meet-and-greet and needs analysis from scratch — they may not have narrowed down a vehicle, a budget, or even whether they're buying today. A be-back has already done some of that work. They may be back because they're close to deciding and want a final push, or because something unresolved from the first visit — a price, a trade number, a spousal conversation — needs to be addressed before they'll move forward.
Starting the conversation over from the beginning, as if it's a fresh up, often frustrates a customer who feels like they already covered this ground. The better opening acknowledges the history directly: "Good to see you again — last time we talked about [specific detail]. Has anything changed, or is that still where things stand?"
DealerSim's Walk-In Customer Simulator covers the fresh-up meet-and-greet, while the Lost Customer Win-Back scenario practices reconnecting with a customer who's already shopped and needs a different kind of conversation to bring back.
